Cheese Class FAQs

"I just wanted to say thank you. Our first cheese class was amazing; I am absolutely hooked. We will definitely be back for more. It was one of the most unique and fun things I have done in this town." - Kristy Owen, 365 Things to do in Austin

Our tastings have been listed as one of the Top 25 Things to do In Austin (by in 2015), 101 Things to Do in Austin when the Temperature is over 100 degrees (by Austin Chronicle in 2014), and lauded by others, including Zagat Austin. We truly love talking cheese; it's one of the best aspects of our jobs! Come let our cheesemongers guide you through an evening sharing cheese stories, histories, and lots of cheese tastings. Most folks start with our Cheese 101 class, which has a different lineup of cheeses each time. At most classes we'll bring accompaniments like bread, olives, and nuts, as well as other pairings like preserves, chocolates, and more. You can elect to participate in our wine or beer pairings with your separate purchase through our Cheese Shop prior to the event. At the end of the class, we'll happily fresh-cut any cheese or other item sampled that evening for your purchase so you can recreate the evening at home with your friends.

We host all of our cheese classes and private events & tastings in our Cheese House located directly across the street from the Cheese Shop. The Cheese House has been home to many great Hyde Park businesses and recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. The history of the house lives on in the wood flooring and ceiling, the architecture, and the original fireplace mantel. We find the Cheese House to be the perfect rustic, yet elegant backdrop for our tastings and events. The Cheese House is located at 500 Park Boulevard. Access the Cheese House parking lot off of Duval Street just north of the house.

How do I sign up for a class?

We process all of our class tickets through Eventbrite and list each upcoming class with the Eventbrite link on our calendar of cheese classes. When you're ready to purchase on the Eventbrite page, click "order now" to book your tickets.

How do I pay with a gift card?

If you've been given a gift card, it can be applied to the purchase of your class tickets. Please fill out the following form gift card payment form and we will review your request and contact you within 48 hours. Please note, that we may be unable to fulfill your request due to limited ticket availability. If the gift card does not cover the full cost of the tickets, credit card payment must be made in order to confirm your tickets. Gift cards can also be used after class to purchase any of the cheeses or goodies that you enjoyed during the tasting.

What if the class I want to take is sold out?

We're so lucky to sell out of some classes hours after we announce them on our newsletter! To be the first to hear about classes, join our newsletter here as that's the first place we announce most classes. Each sold out class has a waitlist and we are often able to accommodate folks from the waitlist. Please sign up once per guest and we'll contact you if a space opens up.

What happens if I can't come to class?

Because we bring in cheese for each class depending on the number of guests that purchase tickets, we are unable to offer refunds or transfers to different dates. If you can't make it to class you are welcome to give your tickets to a lucky friend or family member!

Can I give a class as a gift?

Yes! Either purchase tickets to the upcoming class and surprise your lucky guest (please note: we are unable to offer refunds or transfers) or purchase a gift card in our shop or on our online shop. To purchase tickets with a gift card, call our events team at 512-531-9610 ext. 3 with the gift card number and pin number ready

Please see our calendar of cheese classes page for future scheduled classes and ticket purchasing information.

Our most popular Cheese 101: Seven Styles of Cheese class is $40 per person (plus tax and processing fees). Other tastings cost between $40 and $60 per person plus fees depending on the theme and selection of cheeses. More information can be found about our Cheese Tastings or other events and tickets may be purchased online through our calendar of cheese classes page. You may sign up for a maximum of four seats at a time and please note that ticket purchases are non-refundable and non-transferable to other dates. (If your party is larger than four guests, contact us for information on private parties and tastings.).

Do I have to start with Cheese 101?

Although lots of people take Cheese 101 as their first class, it's by no means obligatory! We have plenty of introductory classes (Our 102 and 103 level classes focus on specific types of cheese like cheddars or blue cheeses, or specific regions or countries) and classes where we focus on pairing cheese with other foods and drinks (Our 200-level classes all focus on pairings, and are good for cheese novices and experts alike).

What do I do if I have an allergy, food sensitivity, or cannot eat raw milk cheeses?

For most classes, we are able to offer a modified cheese board to fit your needs if you contact us before class. For our gluten-free guests, feel free to bring crackers or bread that you can snack on during class. Note: we do serve tree nuts and wheat during class.

How do I volunteer at a class?

Volunteers trade three hours of labor (bringing out chilled water, replenishing bread, and helping us sweep up after class) for a cheese board! To join our roster of volunteers, email with the subject line "please add me to the volunteer roster" and you'll start receiving our volunteer calls each month.

Where do we park?

We have two designated spots in front of the shop, a small parking lot with a handicapped spot in front of the cheese house, as well as street parking on Barrow Ave., on the 600 block of Park Blvd. or behind the cheese shop on Ave. H. Please do not park in spots designated for other businesses, be respectful of our neighbors, and obey parking signs. Thank you!
